YOUR SAFETY IS OUR PRIORITY DG TELLS CORPS MEMBERS

Corps members have been advised not to endanger their lives by embarking on unauthorized journeys as records have shown that the majority of Corps members that have lost their lives have been due to road crashes. 

The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim stated this while addressing the 2019 Batch 'B' Stream ll Corps members deployed to Oyo State at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp Iseyin. He informed the Corps members that their safety is of utmost priority to the management of the Scheme. 

He told the Corps members that as measures to avoid casualties from such unauthorized trips, they are compelled to obtain permission from the appropriate authority before embarking on any journey. 

Giving an instance of religious bodies travelling outside the local government for activities. He said that henceforth vehicles belonging to the three recognized religious groups (NACC, NCCF, MCAN) should be under the State Coordinator's custody and can only embark on a journey upon the approval of the State Coordinator. " The Scheme and your parents have expended so much on you and need returns from such investment".

Speaking further on the safety and security of the Corps members, the NYSC boss admonished them to be security conscious while ensuring that someone knows their whereabouts at any given time.  To the female Corps members, he warned them to refrain from living a lifestyle that would tarnish their image, that of their family and the Scheme. "Respect your dignity because in poverty there is dignity".

On the use of Social media, the DG cautioned the Corps members on the need to verify the authenticity of any information before posting. He emphasized that Corps members should always post issues that promote unity. While they should not allow themselves to be used to circulate hate speeches.

The NYSC boss further appealed to the Corps members to adhere to the Acts establishing NYSC and the Bye-Law. Stating that anyone who breaches the law would be dealt with accordingly. "You must be disciplined and shun any act of criminality".

Brigadier General S. Ibrahim, equally urged the Corps members to embrace the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development program, stating that they are required to acquire a skill that will empower them during and after the Service year.

The Director-General in his address reminded the Corps members that the Service year is a period to impact positively in the lives of the host communities through the Community Development Service. He implored them to be focused and participate fully in all the four cardinal programs of the NYSC Scheme. 

The NYSC boss while addressing the NYSC officials, reiterated that the welfare of the staff remains sacrosanct. He urged the staff to desist from any form of extortion, stating that disciplinary action would be taken against any staff who extort Corps members. The DG specifically warned the officials from engaging in hate speech and petition writing based on falsehood. Rather they should be their brother's keeper and always reflect on what good one would be remembered for.

While on tour of Camp facilities, the Director-General was intimated with some of the challenges being faced at the Camp by the State Coordinator Eniola Ambekemo. On the entourage of the DG was the Acting Director Special duties Mr James Afolayan.

RESPECT THE TRADITIONS AND NORMS OF THE COMMUNITIES, MONARCH URGES CORPS MEMBERS

The traditional ruler Aseyin of Iseyinland, His Royal Majesty Oba (Dr) Abdul-Ganiyu Adekunle Salawu (JP) has urged Corps members deployed to Oyo state to respect the traditions and norms guiding their host communities.

He made this charge while delivering the lecture on rich traditions and cultures of the Yoruba heritage to the 2019 Batch 'B' Corps members at the NYSC permanent Orientation Camp, Iseyin.

His Royal Majesty ably represented by Alhaji Bello Bashiru a Principal lecturer and Director Academic Planning at Oyo State College of Education Lanlate Oyo State, admonished the Corps members to always  respect the traditions and norms of their communities. Stating that this act of respect, will ensure integration and acceptance of corps members by the good people of Oyo State. A Yoruba nation that cherishes respect of their norms and tradition.

The Special guest during the lectures gave a historical overview of the Yorubas spanning from the pre-colonial era till date. He highlighted some qualities of the Yorubas which includes modesty especially in their mode of dressing, bravery, hospitality. 

Further in his lecture the Corps members were enlightened on certain lifestyles inimical to the culture these include: suicide, homosexuality and nudity. He advised the Corps members to detest such acts because of its consequences.

The traditional lecture proferred the Corps members the opportunity to dance to the different drum beats of the rich Yoruba traditions

The Aseyin of Iseyinland assured the Corps members a high level of acceptance in their host communities. "The good people of Oyo State are highly hospitable".

The corps members later entertained the Kabiyesi with rich cultural dance steps of the 3 major tribes (Hausa, Ibo and Yoruba).

Earlier in her welcome address, the NYSC Oyo State Coordinator Eniola Ambekemo expressed her appreciation to the Aseyin of Iseyinland for taking out time to educate the corps members on the cultures and traditions of the Yorubas. Stating that "his fatherly role to NYSC scheme in Oyo State and kind hospitality towards corps members is unparalleled ".

 Ambekemo also applauded the Monarch and the notable sons and daughters of Iseyin land for their commitment towards the scheme. It would be recalled that Hon. Shina Peller representing Iseyin/kajola Federal consistency recently donated a new block of the hostel to the scheme. She used the opportunity to appeal for more support from other well-meaning sons and daughters of Iseyinland.

In a similar development the State Coordinator during the official flag off of the lecture series enjoined the Corps members to take seriously all lectures that would be delivered during the Orientation exercise "This is because lecture which is an integral part of the Orientation course is geared towards keeping you well informed and improve on any lost ground. No knowledge is lost rather it will help you all through your service year".

GOV. MAKINDE CHARGES CORPS MEMBERS TO BE PATRIOTIC

The Executive governor of Oyo State, His Excellency Engr. Seyi Makinde has charged Corps members to be patriotic and selfless in all their activities in the course of their one year mandatory service to the fatherland. 

Gov. Makinde in his address at the Swearing - in - Ceremony for the 2019 Batch 'B' Corps members deployed to the state at the Permanent Orientation Camp Iseyin, tasked the Corps members on patriotism. He enjoined them to be patriotic and selfless in all their activities starting right on camp to their Places of Primary Assignment in order to ensure national development and Oyo State in particular. "Our nation Nigeria depends on your services and it is a great responsibility that you all must bear ".

The executive governor who was ably represented at the occasion by the  Deputy Governor Engr. Rauf Olaniyan (FNSE), urged the Corps members to strive continuously to uphold the ideals of the National Youths Service Corps which emphasize on impacting positively  in the lives of their host communities. 

He reiterated that the task of nation building is a collective effort which invariably requires the integration of Corps members while on camp and later their host communities.

Speaking further, the executive governor reminded the Corps members that the service year is basically a year of discipline and hardwork. On this note, he advised the Corps members to obey all rules and regulations put in place to ensure a hitch free Orientation exercise.

His Excellency further assured the Corps members of their safety while serving in the State. He stated that the administration is determined to invest hugely in the young graduates deployed to the "Pacesetter" State. "We will do everything within our capacity to ensure a conducive and secured environment during and after the Orientation exercise. This will be achieved by putting in place adequate security measures to check any breakdown of law and order. He urged the Corps members to be law abiding and partner with Oyo State in creating a secured environment. 

Speaking in his goodwill message the Chairman State Governing Board represented by the Acting  Permanent Secretary ministry of Youths and Sports Mrs O. J. Adegoke, urged the vibrant youths to tap from the natural instinct of the good people of Oyo State. 

Earlier in her address the NYSC State Coordinator Eniola Ambekemo while reiterating  the Director General's agenda on consolidation of skill acquisition among graduate youths, implored the Corps members to embrace the rare opportunity of being empowered through the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) program while on camp and after the orientation exercise. 

Ambekemo further assured the State government of the Scheme's commitment and readiness to see to the development of the State. 

A total of 2360 Prospective Corps members  comprising of 1120 male and 1240 female who registered as at 12 mid night 19th June 2019 cut off time were administered the Oath of Allegiance with the ten representatives carrying out the sample signing of the oath form before the Chief Judge Oyo State ably represented by Justice Aderonke Aderemi. 

The special guest, the executive governor of Oyo State later took a camp tour to inspect the camp facilities.
